The project to develop this new health and safety ISO standard started in October 2013, ISO 45001 Occupational health and safety management systems.
This new standard will basically use the same principles as the ones presented in the following standards: OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health & Safety Management System, ISO 9001 management systems standards for easier integration of quality and ISO 14001 environmental and occupational health & safety management systems by organizations.
There are actually about 50 countries and international organizations implicated in this project, which should be officially released in October 2016.
The objective is to establish one international standard for the management of workplace health and safety management in order to improve these processes for every type of organization, regardless of the size of the company. In fact, there are 2.2 million death related to workplace accidents each year, all over the world. We can therefore conclude that there is a global need for organizations to improve their OHS management. ISO 45001 will become the benchmark as well as the example for a sound process management for your health, safety and prevention department.
The new standard will promote communication of best practices and principles, as well as problem solving solutions frequently encountered throughout the companies. Once the companies will have implemented and standardized, they will be able to align their operations with the applicable laws and international codes of conduct. ISO 45001 will enable the improvement of the risk management and the emergency planning. It will also help organizations to define and assess their performance measures.
The major differences between OHSAS 18001 and ISO 45001 relate to the context of the organization that is clearly put forward. Indeed, the company will no longer focus only on his own reality, but it should also consider what the community expects of them. The companies will have to be preoccupied by their suppliers, their subcontractors and the impact on the surroundings, as well as the working conditions internally and externally.
Since many companies already have a management system complying to other ISO standards, it has also been mentioned that the new standard ISO 45001 will be inline with the standards already in place.
Maerix closely follows the subject and, in due time, will incorporate ISO 45001 requirements into their health and safety management software. Until then, if you want a sneak preview of this standard, the draft version is available for purchase by your ISO member country.
